About Me – Chris Kalu

Gilbert, AZ | Football Athlete | Mechanic | Leader

I’m Chris Kalu. I fix cars, coach athletes, and play American football like every down might be my last.

I didn’t grow up playing football from a young age—I actually started as a sophomore in high school. At the time, I was just the biggest and fastest kid in the room, weighing around 230 lbs. I didn’t see the field much that first year because I was still learning the game, but I stayed disciplined, kept working, and earned my spot. By the next two seasons, I was starting on varsity as a defensive end, now playing at around 250 lbs, using both strength and speed to make an impact.

One of the hardest lessons I learned came from one of the toughest hits I’ve ever taken. I was locked in on the quarterback, reading the play, when the tackle went down. Out of nowhere, a pulling guard blindsided me and hit me so hard I lost my breath for a moment. That play stuck with me—not just because of the hit, but because it taught me awareness, discipline, and the importance of seeing the whole field, not just the target.

Off the field, I grew up with grease under my fingernails and a football in my hand. Those two worlds—the shop and the field—taught me the same lesson: discipline and people skills drive results. At SSC Auto Repair, I didn’t just change oil and rotate tires. I managed U-Haul rentals, helped customers find the right parts, and kept operations running smoothly. I learned quickly that a clean workspace and a satisfied customer both come down to attention to detail.

I also spend time coaching and mentoring younger athletes. To me, leadership isn’t about shouting—it’s about setting the standard, showing up early, and holding people accountable the right way. Refereeing games has also helped me develop quick decision-making, composure, and the ability to communicate clearly under pressure.

I’m a high school graduate (Diploma – May 2024), currently focused on growing both athletically and professionally. I speak English, Spanish, Igbo, and basic French—because being able to connect with people matters just as much as performance.

Whether I’m under a car, rushing the quarterback, or coaching from the sideline, I bring the same mindset: work hard, stay disciplined, and help others win.
